Canada's Professional Chemists

Who We Are:

Canada's Professional Chemists/Chimistes professionnels du Canada (CPC) is a national organization consisting of provincial organizations of professional chemists and the Canadian Society for Chemistry. Its mandate is to advance the Profession of Chemist in Canada.

CPC was formally organized in 2006, and is made up of representatives from the Association of the Chemical Profession of British Columbia (ACPBC), the Association of the Chemical Profession of Alberta (ACPA), the Association of the Chemical Profession of Saskatchewan (ACPS), the Association of the Chemical Profession of Ontario (ACPO), Ordre des chemistes du Québec (OCQ), the Nova Scotia Chemists Society (NSCS), and the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC).

Vision Statement:
“Chemists are broadly and consistently recognized as professionals across Canada.”

What We Do:

CPC raises the profile of the chemical profession and promotes the professional recognition of chemists in Canada. To this end, the members work toward establishing a “right to practice” status for chemists across the nation.

The members aim to do so by pursuing three avenues:

  • Establishing a definition and scope of practice of chemist that is accepted nationally;
  • Developing awareness of professionalism among chemists through professional affairs courses; and
  • Facilitating transferability of membership between associations across Canada through agreement on common criteria of education and experience.

Progress since the establishment of the CPC include:

  • The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding: “An Agreement to Work Together” (2012). (PDF: CPC MOU)
  • The completion of a review document illustrating the commonalities and differences between participating organizations, the Bordeleau Report (2010). (PDF: CPC Bordeleau Report)
  • In the process of establishing Errors Omissions Insurance for practicing chemists in Canada.
