Pierre Thibault, MCIC

Pierre Thibault is a renowned bioanalytical chemist specializing in mass spectrometry (MS) and proteomics with more than 20 years experience as a principal investigator in academic, government and industry laboratories. He joined the Université de Montréal in 2004 as a professor at the Department of Chemistry and a principal investigator at the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) where he also directs the Proteomics Core Facility. He pioneered the use of label free quantitative proteomics, and continues to develop software that is used to profile complex ion distributions in LC-MS and ion mobility experiments. In combination with sub-cellular fractionation methods, these tools provide a deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms and post-translational modifications that regulate the function and translocation of proteins involved in adaptive immunity and cell signalling. His contributions in sub-cellular proteomics and phosphoproteomics highlighted the early recruitment of antigen processing and presentation machineries on the phagosome of activated macrophages, and uncovered molecular basis of self renewal in leukemic stem cells. Before joining IRIC in 2004, Thibault was a founding director at Caprion Pharmaceuticals from 2001–2004, where he developed an innovative proteomics platform to identify and quantify proteins differentially expressed in cancer cells as part of immunotherapy programs, Prior to this he was a senior research officer with the Institute of Biological Sciences in Ottawa and the Institute of Marine Biosciences in Halifax of the National Research Council of Canada.

This award is presented to a scientist residing in Canada who has made a distinguished contribution to the field of analytical chemistry while working in Canada. It is available to government, industry and academia, on a rotating basis.

Award: A framed scroll, $1,000 cash and up to $1,000 for travel expenses, if required This award is on a rotating basis:

• Nominations being considered for the 2013 selection will be from industry and government (deadline July 2, 2012)
• Nominations being considered for the 2014 selection will be from academia, industry and government (deadline July 2, 2013)
• Nominations being considered for the 2015 selection will be from academia (deadline July 2, 2014)
• The recipient will be required to present an award lecture at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition.

Membership in the Institute is not a prerequisite for this award.

All nominations will remain in force for three years. Nominators are responsible for keeping the record of the nominee up to date and complete.

• Past two winners of the Maxxam Award
• No member of which is to be an employee of Maxxam Analytics

The award shall be presented annually unless the Committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated.
