Raymond J. Andersen, FCIC

Raymond Andersen obtained a BSc in chemistry from the University of Alberta in 1969, a MSc in chemistry from University of California at Berkeley in 1970, and a PhD in marine natural products chemistry from University of California at San Diego in1975. He carried out postdoctoral research in chemistry at MIT before joining the University of British Columbia in 1977, where he is currently a professor of chemistry and earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences. He has received the Merck Sharp and Dohme Award from the CSC, a UBC Killam Research Prize, Fellowship in the CIC, the Rutherford Medal in Chemistry from the Royal Society of Canada, Fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada (2000), the A.E. Schwarting Award from the American Society of Pharmacognosy, a UBC Killam Graduate Teaching Award, the R.U. Lemieux Award, the UBC Jacob Biely Research Prize, and the Paul J. Scheuer Award in Marine Natural Products Chemistry. His research interests encompass all aspects of the chemistry of biologically active marine natural products. Andersen has made important contributions in the areas of structure elucidation, synthesis, biosynthesis, chemical ecology, and drug discovery. Three experimental drugs based directly on Andersen’s research have reached Phase II clinical trials in humans.

This award is presented as a mark of distinction and recognition to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada.

Award: A medal and travel expenses to the conference to present the plenary lecture.

The award shall be presented at the annual Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition or Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference. The recipient will be required to present a plenary lecture.

Every nomination shall be accompanied by an accurate and detailed description of the meritorious contribution of the nominee.

Membership in the Institute is not a prerequisite for receiving this award.

All nominations will remain in force for three years. Nominators are responsible for keeping the record of the nominee up to date and complete.

Selection Committee:

• CIC Chair or Past Chair, on rotating basis as non-voting chair
• Appointee of the National Research Council of Canada
• Appointee of Academy III of the Royal Society of Canada
• Appointee of the CIC, other than the CIC Chair or Past Chair
• Two past CIC medalists

The award shall be presented annually unless the Committee considers that no suitable candidate has been nominated.
